WESTERN MOVIE LOCATION BOOK

I am currently working on the first volume in a planned 3 volume series on the movie and television location sites used in Western films. The first book is mostly written and contains about 300 pages of text for about 150 Southern California locations. For many months I have been gathering images of the sites and now have, by rough estimate, about 10,000 images (mostly screen captures) which I need to make print ready as well as deciding on which ones to utilize. I estimate the book will be at least 500 pages in length with probably well over a 1,000 images in it.

DAN TURNER HOLLYWOOD DETECTIVE

Last month, Pulpville Press released a 3 volume set of Dan Turner stories, beginning with his first stories in Spicy Detective pulp magazine. The set comprises over 1,000 pages of Robert Leslie Bellem stories. These are fun stories to read and range from the spicy era to a fairly tame (for Bellem) type of detective story. Movie Location Books

A couple of movie location books have come to my attention in the past couple of months which you may find interesting. The first one is by Jerry England and is entitled "Reel Cowboys of the Santa Susanas". There isn't much text in it, but it is packed with many illustrations/photos/screen captures and the like. While there are a few errors in the book, such as listing a Republic Studios backlot ranch set as being at the Iverson Movie Ranch, the book is still recommended for all of the western photos. The book is available at lulu.com or through the author's website.

The second book is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED book on the western and serial locations. It is by Tinsley Yarbrough. He is one of a few people who I can call an expert in the field. The hardback book is filled with histories of the filming locations with a lot of vintage photographs as well as current shots of some of the locations. Again, I urge you to purchase this book (I do not receive anything financial benefit) as it is an excellent work. It can be ordered directly from the author. Pulp Tales Magazines On Sale

The Pulp Tales magazines, namely, Tales From the Pulps, Fantastic Adventure Stories, Jungle Stories, Private Detective Stories, and The Magazine of Edgar Rice Burroughs: Fact & Fiction, are having a physical make-over as we transition to distribution (i.e. Amazon.com, Borders.com, your local bookstore, etc.) for these magazines. These titles will begin appearing in 7 x 10 inch versions on Amazon.com (and CreateSpace.com) and in 7.44 x 9.68 inch versions everywhere else (bookstores, Lulu.com, etc.). So, while this transition takes place, all of the original 8.5 x 11 inch magazines are on sale for $8.95 each.
